Description

Travel to Vancouver Island for a truly unique West Coast experience featuring two authentic working vessels. Begin with a two night stay in Port Alberni, a welcoming small town surrounded by mountain scenery and known for its rich outdoor culture. Board the MV Frances Barkley, a 65-year-old heritage ship originally from Norway, and cruise the majestic Alberni Inlet to historic Bamfield. Along the way, enjoy sweeping views of coastal wildlife, remote communities, and invigorating ocean air.
Your journey continues in Gold River with a two night stay before boarding the MV Uchuck. This hardworking vessel travels through the stunning wilderness of Nootka Sound to Friendly Cove (Yuquot). Watch as the crew delivers freight to remote fish farms, logging camps, resorts, and maritime villages that rely on the Uchuck as a crucial lifeline. Passengers often find themselves captivated by the day-to-day operations—from navigating tight docks to launching kayakers directly from the vessel.
Rounding out your getaway are additional highlights, including the awe-inspiring old-growth forests of Cathedral Grove and a relaxing wine tasting experience.

Trip Itinerary

Travel mid morning to Vancouver Island and on to Port Alberni and the McLean Mill National Historic Site for a tour. After the tour check in to the Best Western Barclay Inn. Dinner is included.

Sail along the majestic Alberni Inlet to historic Bamfield and experience the spectacular sights. Aquatic wildlife, remote communities, beautiful views, and salt water air await you! Bamfield also services Pachena Bay and the start of the world famous 77-kilometre West Coast Trail.
The MV Frances Barkley is a 65-year-old heritage ship originating in Norway. After trekking through the Atlantic Ocean to Vancouver Island, she started her current route in 1990.
Today, the ship is known for the essential services it provides to people in the remote communities of the inlet. The 36-metre vessel can carry up to 144 passengers and 100 tons of cargo. This boat cruise is 4.5 hours. Upon arrival enjoy a picnic lunch in Bamfield. Following lunch the coach drives back to the hotel.

Depart from the Port Alberni Valley with a brief stop at Cathedral Grove. Continue to Comox for lunch and wine tasting at the 40 Knots Winery. After lunch travel east through Strathcona Park to the hamlet of Gold River and a two night stay at the Baymont by Wyndham. Dinner tonight is included at a local eatery.

After breakfast board the MV Uchuck III, a working vessel, as it makes its way through Nootka Sound to Friendly Cove (Yuquot). This is the historic birthplace of British Columbia and ancestral home to the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations people where European Traders made first contact. Visit the lighthouse and historic Catholic Church/Cultural Centre, hike the beaches and trails, and learn about the significant native culture of the area.
Lunch is available for sale onboard the boat. Dinner is included at a local eatery.

Depart Gold River for Qualicum. Take the midafternoon ferry back to the lower mainland.
